Let's talk about something nobody wants to bring up: money.
Gray divorce hits women's
finances in a way that's genuinely different from divorce at any other life stage. There are decades of combined assets to untangle. There may be a retirement account you didn't build independently, or one you stepped back from years ago to support the marriage, the household, or a career your husband was building.
There are decisions about the house - sell it, keep it, can you even afford to keep it alone.
There's Social Security, which most women don't realize they may be entitled to claim against an ex-spouse's record, even after divorce.
I want to be upfront: I'm not a financial advisor, and this isn't financial advice. You deserve someone with real expertise sitting across from you for those decisions - a fee-only financial planner who specializes in divorce, ideally.
But here's what I do know, from having lived it: you don't have to figure this out blind, and you don't have to be ashamed that you don't already know the answers. Most of us weren't taught this. Most of us built our financial lives around a partnership we assumed would last, and now we're rebuilding solo, often for the first time in decades.
Start by asking questions - of a financial planner, of an attorney, even of other women in this exact situation who've already been through it. This is solvable.
It doesn't feel that way at 2am. It is.
💛
If you're in this right now, tonight, I built something specifically for this moment - a 10-minute audio reset for exactly this kind of night. You'll find the link below.
And if you're ready to talk about this directly, with someone who has lived exactly what you're living - that conversation is always open.
