Let me say something that might feel like relief: it's not that therapy failed you. It's that it was never built for this specific moment.
If you're navigating gray divorce, you've probably already tried it. A good therapist, maybe even one you liked. You talked about your feelings. You processed the timeline. You learned some language for what happened. And still — the 2am spiral kept coming.
That's not a failure of therapy. That's a mismatch of tools.
Therapy is built to help you process. It's not always built to help you Become.
Most therapeutic frameworks are designed around healing — closing a wound, understanding a pattern, making peace with the past. That work matters. But if you're sitting in a house that's suddenly too quiet, wondering who you even are anymore, processing isn't the whole answer. You don't just need to make peace with what happened. You need a way forward into who you're Becoming next.
Here's the difference nobody explains.
Recovering from divorce means getting back to okay. Becoming after divorce means discovering who you are now that you're not spending all your energy holding everyone else together.
That's a different journey. And it needs a different kind of guide.
I'm not a therapist, and I don't pretend to be one. What I offer instead is something therapy can't: I've lived exactly what you're living. Twice divorced — the second time after nearly 20 years of marriage. I know what it is to sit in that quiet house at 2am and feel the narrative take over. I know what it is to have built your entire identity around caretaking — a spouse, children, aging parents — and then wake up one day with no idea who you are without them needing you.
You don't have to explain yourself from scratch with me. I already know what you mean before you find the words.
That's the real difference. Not better than therapy. Different from it. A companion for the part of the journey that starts after the processing — the part where you stop talking about surviving and start building the life you're actually choosing.
If any of this feels like recognition, trust that. That's not an accident.

And if you're ready to talk about this directly, with someone who has lived exactly what you're living - that conversation is always open.
